Panther Camp - Last Day

The last day was just as fun as the first day!  You could tell that these kids were TIRED though - it really is a long week for them!  Zane still takes a nap 80% of the time during the day, so to go 5 days straight with constant activity and no real rest time really takes a toll on him, but he pulled through and enjoyed every minute of camp.  On the way home Friday he said "that camp was amazing, I can't wait to go back next year" - it was so good to hear him say that!

 This isn't a good picture of them, but all of those ladies in the tie-dye shirts were the nurses on staff all week and they were FABULOUS!  These ladies had to take vacation days from their "real" jobs to volunteer at camp and most of them have been doing it for years - pretty cool.

They tried to throw Diabetes education in here and there and usually tried to do it in a subtle way.  Most of the stuff they were trying to teach the campers was over Zane's head and the other kids in his age group, but it still was good for them to hear and I know that Zane at least retained a good amount of it.  One thing they wanted to test if the kids knew was their Target Blood Sugar #, their Insulin:Carb Ratio and their Correction Factors (how much insulin to give to help lower a high blood sugar).  On day 4 one of the nurses said she wanted all kids to know it by the next day and be able to write it down.  I spoke with that nurse after that and explained to her that I didn't feel that that was something Zane really needed to know right now since he isn't doing any of his own diabetes care - I told her that these #'s really won't mean anything to him.  She agreed, but said that it was still important for him (and others his age) to hear the terms and start to understand what they were, but understood that the little kids would need guidance from us adults to remembering what to write down the next day.  Anyway, on Day 5 all campers had to write down their #'s before heading out to their first activities for the day - here is Zane's handy work...dictated by me, all written by him!

Then it was off to more bouncy house fun!  The boys got to chose everyday if they wanted to go swimming or play in the bouncy house and they almost all always chose bouncy house!

And here is why Zane got the award for "injection site rotation" - he prefers his shots on his arms and legs, I've tried to talk him into using his tummy many times and he's always said "no way".  All it took was him seeing one other kid do it and nurse Jan rooting him on that he could do it too and he was sold - now he wants them there all of the time.  Of course his tummy is so tiny, so we only do maybe one a day there, but we are definitely getting in some good rotation on his body!!  He takes his shots like a champ, but he still can't watch, haha!

Daddy and Landon came down for the last half of the day - Josh couldn't stay away from the Go Karts!
