For Fun

I thought it would be fun to compare Zane and Landon at around the same age with close to the same pose...definitely some similarities, but very different at the same time!!

3 Months Old

Landon,

Wow, 3 mos old already, I can't believe it. You have changed so much over the last month and for the most part they were all good changes! You started to revert a little on your sleeping over the last month and then the other night I decided to try something new and put you to bed without swaddling you. You were never a fan of being swaddled, but everyone told me you'd sleep better swaddled...they were wrong! Once I stopped swaddling you, you started sleeping all night...granted, you have a hiccup of a night here and there, but for the most part we are all sleeping better! I can't say I blame you, I don't think I'd enjoy being wrapped up like a burrito and not able to have my arms and hands free.

Speaking of hands...you have found yours! You love, love, love to suck on your fist. Just the other day you started to actually look at your hands and it cracks me up how you watch it move around and have this look of awe on your face!

You are becoming much more of a happier baby and we are just thrilled about it! Those first few months were rough on us all, but it looks like you just might be turning a corner after all! I remember your brother turning a corner around 3 mos and I was hopeful you would too, but I had my doubts too! I love to see your smile and hear you "talk"' when anyone looks at you or even if you are by yourself on your play mat. You get so excited, kicking your feet and jabbering away...I can't help but stop whatever it is I'm doing and listen to you and smile back at you!

Another trick you have learned over the last month is how to blow bubbles with your spit! Zane thinks its the funniest thing when you have a lip full of bubbles!

The only negative change I think you've made this month is deciding that you do not like to be in the car! This is just perfect timing now that I've gone back to work and have a nice 40 minute commute each way with you in the car (although you are this way even if we are on a 5 minute drive somewhere)!! Thankfully you tire yourself out pretty quick from crying and fall asleep...that is until I hit a red light or are stuck in traffic...instantly you wake up and remind me you don't like being in the car!

I am amazed at how much you have grown over the last month and how many little and big changes you have made. You are such a cute little boy and I am so glad you are ours, you really do complete this family little man!

Happy 3 month Birthday!

Wipeout

Zane was asking to go outside and play all day today, but unfortunately its been pooring down rain most of the day. The last time he asked about going out to play, Josh told him no and reminded him he had plenty of toys in the house to play with. Well...this is what Zane came up with to do for some rainy-day fun. What a goofball.

Mr. Chatty Part II

I can't get enough of this kid's jabbering! I had him in his bouncy seat in the kitchen tonight while I was cooking dinner and as you can tell he was keeping me entertained.

Landon was laying on his play-mat last night just talking away, I had to capture a little on video.

What else can happen to this family!

Just when you think that things are starting to get back to normal, God decides to test you again!

Last night I had just put the boys to bed and was upstairs folding laundry. Josh came upstairs and was having a hard time catching his breadth and told me that he was in excruciating pain through his abdomen and chest. He was having a hard time breathing, sweating profusely and very pale...I started to freak out thinking he was having a heart attack or something. I called my good friend Jen and asked her to come watch the kids because I needed to get Josh to the hospital, she got here in less than 5 mins. Josh was laying on the tile floor in our entry way by this point barely talking and trying to cool himself off on the tile...I knew there was no way I could get him up and like I said I seriously thought he was having a heart attack, I called 911. Firemen and paramedics came and assessed and it was decided that he needed to go the hospital to be checked out. After a very long night at the hospital and after many tests, it was determined that he is housing quite a few gall stones! Thankfully his gall bladder was not inflamed so did not need emergency surgery, but he will need surgery to remove the gall bladder very soon. He has a high chance of this episode happening again before surgery because of the gall stones that are still there, but we are crossing our fingers it doesn't happen again. IF it does happen again, at least we will know what it is this time and I can feel comfortable that my husband is not suffering from a heart attack at 33! Josh has a consult with surgery on April 7th and we'll get a surgery date scheduled after that. I am so happy that he is ok, but man, what a scary night.

HUGE thank you to Jen for staying with our sleeping boys for the 6+ hours we were gone.

Yes, people, I always have my camera handy:

After only 2.5 hours of sleep, I was up to get ready for work and knew Josh was not going to be able to take Zane to daycare today or go to work...so I took Zane to work with me after dropping Landon off at daycare. Zane did SO WELL, he is such a good boy!

Here he is taking his nap on my office floor:

TEAM ZANE

Many of our friends and family who read this blog probably already received an email from me regarding this, but for those who didn't, here you go!

Each year, 13,000 children are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (approximately 40 children every day). As most of you know, on December 20, 2010 my 3-year-old son Zane was one of them. The day Zane was diagnosed was a day I will NEVER forget, as it was one of the hardest days of my life. Now that I have gotten over the initial shock of his diagnosis, been educated on how manageable this disease can be, and seen how Zane has taken it on like it is no big deal, I have decided to try and no longer be mad at the world for this happening to him. I am putting my energy into fundraising to find a cure for this disease, hopefully in his lifetime! What bothers me the most about Type 1 Diabetes is that it is currently incurable and there is no remission. That needs to change. In order to make that change, we need to find a cure...and to find a cure we need to raise money to fund the research!

We will have a team in this year's Nordstrom's Beat the Bridge to Beat Diabetes on Sunday, May 15. We will be dedicating the team to Zane and naming our team after him...Team Zane!

If anyone is interested in making a donation to this incredible cause and a cause that obviously hits home to me, please follow the directions here:

TO DONATE to Zane's Team:

Back to work...

My days of laying around in my pj's until midday, being covered in spit up, putting together puzzles with Zane, cuddling my boys, going somewhere fun everyday have come to an end...its back to work! Today was actually my 2nd day back, but was too tired to do a post last night!

Its definitely going to take a little time to develop a routine in the mornings to getting both boys up, fed and dressed in a decent amount of time so I'm not late everyday! Josh is now in charge of taking Zane to daycare, something he's never done before, so its an adjustment for him as well (as in getting up a little earlier and getting out the door on time to get Zane to daycare and himself to work on time)! I didn't want to leave before them because I know Zane would get too upset, but I think I'm going to have to come up with something sneaky to get out earlier because I'm late to work if I wait!

Going back to work is a necessity for us to have medical/dental benefits and to live our current comfortable lifestyle. Work has been something that I have enjoyed for the most part; I like adult conversation, it's nice to feel "needed" by people outside of those needing a bottle or chicken nuggets microwaved and most of the time I actually like my job. Going back this time was A LOT harder than after my maternity leave with Zane and to be completely honest its not harder because of missing Landon more it harder because I am not the one helping Zane with his diabetes everyday. I am relying on someone else to call me throughout the day with his blood sugars, carb intake and asking me what they should do to lower or raise his blood sugar. I knew the day would come that I would not be the one in "control" (not that you can be in control of this whacky disease) of Zane's diet 100% or his blood sugars/insulin, but what I didn't know was how hard that would be.

When he was home with me for 3 mos we had his blood sugars in GREAT control, never ran over 200, for the most part were always within range, he ate 3 meals a day, had 2 or 3 snacks, all planned out by me (approved by Zane though) and all accounted for. He's been in daycare for 2 days and his blood sugars have been all over the place, above 3o0 a couple of times...its killing me to not just quit my job and stay home with him until he goes to school full time, its killing me to not reach through the phone and grab him and pull him back to me, its killing me to not be there. I have been in tears both nights because I feel so lost, I feel so confused about what my priorities are, I feel so angry at God for letting my child have this disease, I feel angry with other people who tell me to "chill out" about it and that "its out of my control" and that its "only a number" and "not to freak out"...I'm sorry, I am too Type A for that right now people! Now just so you all know the daycare is doing a WONDERFUL job with Zane and his diabetes, it is not their fault that he's running high blood sugars, its basically because he's choosing not to eat what they prepare for breakfast & lunch so his blood sugar drops, they then treat as needed, he then eats a higher carb snack and his blood sugar spikes. Also, Zane's pancreas is slowly starting to shut down more and more and will until its completely done producing insulin (anywhere from 6-12 mos after diagnosed), so it could be its shut down more and we need to up his insulin...its all a crap shoot.

On a happier note, Zane seems to like this new daycare/preschool as do we so far! He gets a little sad when Josh leaves, but by the time Josh gets to the car he's fine (Josh peeks in the window to check on him before driving away)!

No picture of Zane on his first day, but here is his little certificate (sorry, it scanned sideways...just turn your head or your laptop on its side and you'll get the jist of it):

Landon is going to the same daycare where Zane went as a baby. He was only there yesterday since he isn't going on Tuesday's until this summer (my mother-in-law watched him today). I called to check on Landon yesterday and Tracey informed me that he surely was a fussy baby like I had told her and that she didn't believe me at first because he was all smiles and then he just turned into a fuss bucket...I warned her this kid was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde! I apologized and begged her not to fire him and she laughed and said not to be sorry, he's just a baby and that this too will pass...God, I hope she's right, haha! I love that kid, but man he's a handful most days!

Here is a picture of Landon with Tracey on his first day:

Its about time...

It only took me 3 1/2 years, but I am happy...scratch that SO EXCITED to let the world know that I have finally finished Zane's baby scrapbook (his 1st year)! Just in time to start Landon's, haha! I have been working on this off and on (more off than on) the last 3 1/2 years and really dove into it while I was on maternity leave and today, I finally finished it! I knew if I didn't finish it while I was on leave, it would never get done and in turn Landon would never have his own book! I have already printed the pictures and done all of the journaling for the pages I need to do so far for Landon's book...I just need to put the pieces together and I'll hopefully be on track before going back to work Monday (that's a pretty ambitious goal I know).

Pretty neat that I've got both boys on the same afternoon nap schedule!!

No, I am not doing their entire lives in a scrapbook, I wish, but time just doesn't allow. So...for everything after their 1st birthday they will need to jump into the 21st Century and log on to the family blog to see what happened next for them!

I just had to post some pictures of Zane's book because...well, honestly, because I'm damn proud of it!

Children's Museum

After our lazy day at home yesterday, Zane and I were rejuvenated and ready to go do something fun today! If you can't tell, I am not one who likes to just stay home, I like to always be on the go and thankfully Zane is the same way, so it works well...not sure what Landon likes yet, but due to his age he doesn't get a vote yet! I was stumped as to what to do today, so I put my thinking cap on and started looking around on the internet a bit and came across the Tacoma Children's Museum, since it is only about a 20 min drive for us and relatively inexpensive to get into, I thought why not! Packed up the diaper bag and kids quickly and headed down south. I've only been to a couple of children's museums and I will say this one is not my favorite, pretty small and not a ton of things to do, but Zane had a blast, so I guess it was worth our $6 admission!

His favorite room by far...this is where we spent most of the time there.

Lazy Day

My days of maternity leave are numbered and I think for the past 9 weeks I've been off we've had something to do just about every day...I can't remember one day that we just stayed home all day! Since Zane is getting over a cough and Landon was still feeling a little poopy today after his shots yesterday and loooooong night last night I decided that today was the day we would just stay home and have a p.j. day! I'm so glad we did...I was able to accomplish a lot of laundry, scrapbooking and just plain ol' quality time with my boys! I am going to miss spending all day with them when I go back to work and I know Zane is going to have a really hard time going back to daycare (and a new daycare/preschool at that), but its something that will inevidently have to happen, so I plan to make the best out of the next two weeks!

Please note this is a VERY un-flattering picture of me, but I wanted to remember our p.j. day, so I captured it!
