Stripes
So without much thought - the boys and I were all in stripes today!! Pretty dorky I know, but kinda fun at the same time :)
Jump Planet - Type 1 Event
Just like last year we headed out to Jump Planet in Bothell for a free JDRF event for Type 1 kiddos and their families. We had a great time! It was very different this year than last year in the fact we actually knew people when we got there! My friend Dakota and her daughter Claire were there and she and Zane hit it off right away again. Then my internet friend (!) Kristen was there with her husband and little guy (3 1/2) Luke. I had never met Kristen personally, but we have been come friends through our blogs, Facebook and via email - it was great to finally meet in person! Josh and I really liked her and her husband and Zane and Luke are right about the same age, so we are hoping we can all meet up again sometime soon to catch up some more! We also saw other families that we have met through support groups and at the Family Retreat last year. It sucks that we all know each other because of this poopie disease, but it is nice to know that if we have to live with this lifestyle that there are other people out there that understand living with it too!
Ok, onto why you really are looking at this post - pictures of my cute kids :) Let me warn you, the lighting in this place was HORRIBLE, so it looks like the kids have a bad case of jaundice, but I promise you, all of their livers are just fine!

Ice Skating
My brother plays ice hockey and hits up the ice skating rinks on the weekends to practice his moves - he invited Zane along yesterday, which was perfect since Zane has been asking me to take him! Since I'm not much of an ice skater I didn't think it would be right to go out on the ice with a 1 year old in my arms, so I opted to stay on the sidelines and watch! Zane tried it at first without the walker and was doing OK, but definitely was having a hard time.
I opted to rent him a walker and I'm glad I did! He took off like no one's business after that! My brother was definitely close by to help him out and help him up when he fell, but Zane was a "natural" as my brother would say (as long as he had the walker in his hands, haha).
We are going to go with him again some other time soon and try it again without the walker - hopefully I'll con my mom into watching Landon so I can hit the ice with them!! Landon enjoyed eating snacks and watching his brother though!

Wild Hair
Landon has been having some insanely wild hair these days - I like to keep it longer on top, but its getting rather difficult to manage! Its at his wildest after he wakes up and yesterday after his nap was definitely no different! I had to take a few pictures before getting him out - I'm sure he'll appreciate these later!

1 Year Follow-Up
Zane had his 1 year follow-up appointment at Children's Hospital this morning. He has to go for 3 mos follow-up for the rest of his life (although obviously will transition out of Children's once he's 18!). The only real difference between today's appointment and his regular 3 mos appointments is he had to have a blood draw today (his first one since the day he was admitted into the hospital). In the blood draw they check his thyroid and his gluten tolerance - two other autoimmune disorders that can sometimes accompany Type 1 is Celiac (Gluten intolerance) and Thyroid Disease. The thyroid disease I could handle, the Celiac one; I won't even get into what my emotions would do if that ever rang true for him....so we just won't talk about it!
Anyway, today's appointment went great! I was really worried about his A1C this round because it seemed as if his blood sugars were running pretty high over the last 3 mos (off and on, but more on it seemed). If you remember from earlier posts, his doctor is very happy if his A1C is between 6-8 - as he gets older the control will need to be tighter and they will want his number on the lower end of that definitely, but for now if its anywhere in between there they are happy! His last A1C was 7.2 (down from 7.9), but I was pretty sure we'd be in the 8's this time around...I was happily wrong! His A1C was a glorious 7.3!! I was amazed and very excited (I try not to take that number personally, but I won't lie...I do). His doctor said that we were doing great and that we didn't need to make any changes! She also mentioned that she was very impressed that I made all of his last insulin adjustments on my own - maybe, just maybe I'm starting to get the hang of this thing...for now...God only knows Diabetes likes to throw curve balls!
We talked a little more about an insulin pump and she said that it was totally up to us, she said we were doing very good with our numbers on injections, but if we wanted to go the pump route we could. Josh and I decided to sign up for the "Pump Eligibility" class that Children's offers - there we can go over and play with all of the different pumps they offer and get a better feel for what we might like or if we want to go that route at all. Zane still isn't on enough insulin to go on the OmniPod (our preferred choice due to the fact its tubeless), but he's slowly creeping up to it. We will go check out the other pumps, although, most likely will just continue to wait for him to get up to where he can do the Pod. We'll see though, maybe we'll change our minds - its been known to happen! Josh and I really want Zane on an insulin pump before he goes to Kindergarten and lucky for us he has a late fall birthday, so he wont be starting until he's almost 6, so we have some time!!
Anyway, we were very happy with today's visit and are hopeful that his blood test results will come back good as well! The doctor said that Zane was "growing like a weed" her words not mine - that's always a good sign!

It was a pretty traumatic experience for him (how does Mason do these so often Lori, he is one brave little guy) - I will say these Phlebotomists are skilled people to work with little kids, I've never seen someone get a needle into a child's ever moving/squirming arm so fast in my life!!

Ice Storm and Lights Out
After our beautiful snowfall came the not so beautiful ice storm. Not quite sure I've ever been in an ice storm quite like this before and to be honest, I'm not sure I want to ever again. I left for work really early on Thursday, knowing the roads would be terrible and because I don't have either kiddo with me on Thursdays. I was only going between 35-40 mph on I-5 with not many cars around (which was good)...my cell phone rings and its my boss telling me that all of Group Health is on a delayed start until 10 a.m. WHAT?? Never has that happened! I opted to still just continue into work opposed to turning around and I'm glad I did; there were a lot of patients and staff that needed to be called so with me calling some from the clinic and my boss calling others from home we succeeded in our mission!
Around 10 a.m. I received a text from Josh informing me the power was out at home - oh joy. My least favorite thing to deal with is power outages and this time was especially frustrating because I knew I'd be by myself with both boys while Josh was at work - no fun. Thankfully we have a gas fireplace and gas hot water tank. Josh put Zane's un-opened viles of insulin in the garage fridge where it was colder - I was so afraid of losing those...I had just ordered them so we had 6 of them.
I gave the boys a bath as soon as I got home and still had some daylight, then we trekked out to the street to see what was going on. Zane loved watching the cars slip and slide and I didn't, so we quickly went back inside, haha!
After our little adventure of watching bumper cars and people playing "Frogger" while trying to cross the street, we had dinner [cereal] by candlelight and then the novelty of playing with flashlights wore off and boredum set in!
Landon played with hotwheels by flashlight (although in the pictures since my flash is super bright you wouldn't believe that it was by flashlight). And Zane and I played many rounds of Connect Four after the batteries on the iPod and Kindle were dead!
Even though we have the gas fireplace the upstairs (where all of the bedrooms are) were mighty chilly. I piled on extra blankets for the boys and then I read a few magazines by headlamp and headed off to bed rather early myself!
Thankfully the power came on around 3:30 a.m. so we weren't out for too long!! I still don't want to do it again anytime soon!
