12 out of 32

The boys and I had the chance to meet up with my good friend Brenda and 2 out of 3 of her kiddos tonight for a belated birthday celebration.  I have known this lovely lady for 12 of her 32 years and I'm so happy I have!  Brenda is an amazing woman, a wonderful mother and a crafter after my own heart!  Thank you for being my friend for so long Brenda.

Thoughts in that cute little head...

This post is a very sad one for me to write, but one I want to do for documentation purposes more than anything.  And also to serve as a reminder that even when our kids act all happy-go-lucky that sometimes there is more going on in their little heads than they lead on.

Yesterday as the boys and I were driving around...

Out of the blue Zane had this little conversation with me:

Z: "where did Becca go again, mom?"
M: "what honey, who's Becca?"
Z: "Miss Becca from school" (Becca used to work at Zane's school and was one of the gals who helped manage his Diabetes while there)
M: "She still works for Rainbow, but she moved to a different location because she got a better job there (hard to explain promotion to a 5 year old)"
Z: "Maybe she was just tired of checking my blood sugars or something"
M: "Zane DON'T YOU EVER THINK THAT, no one will EVER been tired of helping you check your sugars or making sure that you stay healthy"
Z: "OK"

I have tears in my eyes just typing this out - it really hurt me to hear him say that.  I KNOW that no one at his school or in his life has ever given him the impression or said to him that they are "tired" of helping him with his sugar checks, but the fact he even thought that just breaks my heart.  Why would he think that?  Where would such an innocent mind ever get a thought like that?  Will someone someday ever tell him that they are tired of him having Diabetes?  If anyone is tired of it...HE IS...he is the one who has to deal with this day in and day out and for the rest of his life most likely.  So help me if I ever find out someone has said anything negative to him about his Diabetes or about helping him with managing it - that person may or may not ever see the light of day again - I am probably not kidding.

Who could ever be tired of helping this little piece of perfection??

Date Night - 5 year old style

Zane and I had a much anticipated "Date Night" tonight and it was so much fun!!!  First we headed to Starbucks to get a cake-pop (his choice) and then we headed to the Supermall {after it was closed}!  Yesterday, we bought a ticket for $5 (money went to charity) to get into the mall tonight after it closed to partake in some Christmas festivities!  Many of the stores were having special sales and the mall was having some fun activities for the kids - one of which was the arrival of the Jolly ol' Fella himself - Santa!!!  Zane could not wait!

Once we got the mall, we just walked around for a bit and did a little shopping - but every 5 mins he was asking me what time it was because he didn't want to miss the arrival of Santa.

Around 7:00 p.m. we started to hear the sounds of a marching band - which meant only one thing...Santa!  Zane bolted out of a store so fast to see where the big man was...he was quite a ways ahead of us...

But after a lot of pushing and shoving patience we made our up to the man in red!  Zane thought this was the coolest thing ever...he kept telling me that people probably thought we were in the parade, haha!

He insisted on waiting in line to see Santa once Santa got to his final resting place (that sounded so morbid)!  I explained to Zane that we would not be doing pictures with Santa tonight for two reasons...1. He was not in his adorable Christmas outfit that I have worked so hard in putting together and 2. Landon was not with us.  He still wanted to wait (even though we were first in line behind Santa on his walk to his picture post - we were no where near first in line for photos/visits with him).

If you are not buying pictures, you are not allowed to take any photos of your own - I like to pick and chose what rules I listen to sometimes (great role model for my kids I know) - so I turned my flash off and snuck one quick one...it not a good one, but it proves he got to visit with Santa tonight!

After our quick visit, it was off to do face arm painting (kid HATES to have his face painted)...

And have a great alien balloon character made for him...

We had a great time tonight just the two of us and I know that Daddy and Landon had a great time at home too!  He is seriously my favorite 5 year old on this planet!  Thanks for hanging out with me tonight buddy - I'm in the Christmas spirit more now, than ever!!!

This was so much fun tonight, I think we will be doing this again every year...although, next year we might take the whole family...or maybe just make it a Zane and Mommy tradition - who knows!

Siebol's

We headed over to Derek and Emma's on Saturday night for a delicious dinner and fun play time for the kids!  Landon and their son Bjorn are only about a month a part, so it was fun to watch them interact (or not interact - still playing parallel at this age).  Its so funny to watch Zane get into a room with a bunch of baby toys...he goes to town playing like he's 2 again.  He doesn't really do that at home (maybe because we don't have a lot of "baby toys" around anymore already), but whenever we go to friends' houses who do have them, he just goes crazy.

Derek was unlucky enough to fall into Lake Washington in early September and cut his leg on a big rock and it wasn't the embarrassment of falling into a lake fully clothed that was so unlucky.  It was that he contracted a flesh eating bacteria (the same one the girl back east {I think is where she lived} contracted this past summer after falling off a zipline and she lost 2 of her limbs {maybe more, I can't remember}).  It took 3 trips to the ER before a doctor actually diagnosed him with it (thanks to his wife who had a feeling that is what it was and was very persistent on their last trip in) - precious time was lost when something that serious had invaded his body.  Thankfully he was put on a crazy cocktail of antibiotics (one was the same one used to treat anthrax poisoning) and after spending a week in the hospital he was free to go home and finish up his antibiotics there and thank God he kept all of his limbs.

Anyway, that was a total side-note story, but one I felt worth mentioning because its something you hear about on the news from time to time, but something you don't think will ever happen to you or anyone you know.

Back to our night - we had a great dinner and great time catching up and the boys all had a great time playing!!

I love how Landon always leans in for the picture when he's in it with someone else!

Engrossed into a movie!  Landon cried the whole way home when we had to leave that dog behind!

Indoor Soccer

Zane started up indoor soccer again last weekend - but due to his party I had Josh take him so I could finalize stuff for that - having Josh take him of course meant no pictures!  So I took Zane this Saturday and of course I took more pictures than I needed to and sadly most of them didn't turn out...but here's a few to prove he played!

Have I mentioned this kid loves soccer?!  One little problem...he's a ball hog!  His coach kept telling him to pass the ball and he kept on running/dribbling the ball like he didn't hear her (when I full well know he did)...anyway, might need to teach him that there is no 'i' in team - or maybe just let him figure it out on his own!

And the little brother :)

Soccer Party

If anyone knows me, they know I start planning my kids' birthday parties as early as possible.  Last spring I thought I had talked Zane into having a Lego party for this 5th Birthday...he seemed fine with it.  Then at the beginning of the summer, he asked me if for his 6th birthday he could have a soccer party.  That is when it hit me...I was taking away all of his fun in picking his own birthday theme by me "talking him into" a theme I thought would be fun.  I asked him if he would rather have a soccer party for his 5th birthday instead and he got all excited and of course said yes!  So out the window went Legos and in flew Soccer!

Yesterday was the big day for his Soccer Party and I'm pretty sure he had a blast!  We had a great turn out of friends from all over (school, family friends, diabetes camps etc).

Thanks to my friend Joe - we designed some pretty cool "tickets" for the party invitations!

The party was at a brand new indoor soccer facility in Tacoma - we had never even been there before I booked it, but I figured since it was new it was probably pretty good - I was right!  Since the party wasn't at our house or even near our house I wanted to try and make the food easy, yet still make it soccer themed if I could.  The WONDERFUL cake was done by my friend from work Katrina - she did a fabulous job and I'm not sure I could ever properly thank her.  Not only did Katrina come through with the cake - but she came through with putting her two kids up to entertaining the party kids the entire party!  Both are soccer players themselves and they did a great job getting the kids organized - it was still some mass chaos from time to time, but the kids had a blast and really played their hearts out!

And because like I've said on here before Diabetes doesn't give a crap where you are or what you are doing or that you are at your own birthday party and only have the field for an hour to play - it will throw a low blood sugar of 37 at you just because it can...

I felt so bad for Zane at this moment.  I really try to not feel sorry for him, but seriously...his own birthday party and he had to sit out 20+ mins of it so his blood sugar could come up enough to safely let him back out on the field.  Thankfully after 2 juice boxes AND a package of fruit snacks, he was ready to kick-it and never looked back!

Now onto cake and presents - every birthday child's favorite part I think!!

Huge thank you to Sierra and Brad for putting these kids to work out on the field, they had a blast and I'm pretty sure the party wouldn't have been as fun if Josh and I were in charge of that!

Now to start planning next year's!  Just kidding...sort of!
